Sunset Pier Becoming Major Concert Venue

The Sunset Pier at the Ocean Key Resort is becoming a major concert venue here. Matt Trahan, the resort’s general manager, has just announced this year’s Key West Concert Series, which includes live performances by the Ark Band, Bump, the Scott Kirby Band and the Ragbirds.

The series, originally known as the “Stars on the Water Concert Series, has featured acts such as Stephen Marley, Janiva Magness, the Radiators and Galactic.

Conceived by Trahan in 2001, the concept was to bring world class entertainment to a really cool place to listen to live music— the 200-foot-long Sunset Pier out over Key West Harbor.

Hemingway Days Continue This Weekend

PHOTO: LOOK-ALIKE CONTEST— One of the highlights of the annual Hemingway celebration is the Hemingway Look-Alike contest, sponsored by Sloppy Joe’s Bar. This is the 29th year for this event. The second preliminary round of judging is set for 6:30pm this evening, Friday, July 24, at the bar. The final round and the selection of this year’s winner is Saturday evening at 6:30.

Ernest Hemingway’s decade of residence in Key West ended late in 1939, but his literary legacy lives on— both in the island city and in the annual Hemingway Days festival. The festival started last Tuesday and wraps up this weekend.
